Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UBN): arrival & transit guide
What to expect landing at Chinggis Khaan International Airport in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia: the arrival flow, transit rules, and onward transport.
Chinggis Khaan International Airport sits well outside Ulaanbaatar itself, in the Khoshig Valley south of the city, replacing the old in-town Buyant-Ukhaa airport in 2021. Note the code: this new airport uses UBN, not the ULN code the older facility carried and that some older guides and booking tools still show. If a flight search shows ULN, it is referring to the closed airport, not the one you will actually land at.
Arriving passengers follow signage from the gate to a single immigration hall. Nationalities that need an e-visa should have it arranged and approved before boarding, since Mongolia's e-visa system is an online pre-approval, not a counter you apply at after landing; a smaller group of nationalities can get a visa stamped on the spot. After passport control, baggage claim and a customs check sit on the same level before the exit into the arrivals concourse.
The terminal is a single modern building, so a same-airport connection does not mean changing buildings, but Mongolia has no dedicated international transit zone: every arriving passenger, including one connecting onward, clears immigration and collects bags before checking in again for the next flight. Build real time into a short connection here rather than assuming an airside transfer.
Onward transport into Ulaanbaatar itself runs along the dedicated highway connecting the airport to the city, roughly an hour's drive; taxis and pre-arranged transfers wait at the arrivals exit, and shuttle buses also run the same route.
