Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU): arrival & transit guide
What to expect landing at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Port Louis, Mauritius: the arrival flow, transit rules, and onward transport.
Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, usually just called Mauritius Airport, runs a single terminal for both international and domestic traffic, southeast of Port Louis. From the aircraft, arriving passengers follow one path through immigration, then baggage claim, then customs.
Most nationalities enter Mauritius without a visa for an ordinary tourist stay, and a smaller number can get one issued right at the immigration desk on arrival rather than applying beforehand; either way, the process happens at the same passport control counters, with a tour-operator service desk in the arrivals area for anyone who booked through a package.
Connecting onward to Rodrigues or another domestic point means clearing immigration first, since Mauritius does not offer an airside transfer that skips passport control: after the passport check, signage marked for domestic connections leads to a separate security screening before the domestic departure gates, distinct from the international ones.
Outside the terminal, several public bus routes run between the airport and central Port Louis and the main tourist areas, and taxis and pre-arranged transfers are readily available for a more direct trip to a hotel.
