A North Korean visa is not something you apply for directly. The operator collects your passport details and submits a group application to North Korean authorities weeks ahead of the trip.

Almost every group flies in on a charter from Beijing, since that is where tours typically assemble before departure. Backpacking or solo sightseeing inside the country is not an option once the group visa is issued.
