Ivato International Airport (TNR): arrival & transit guide
What to expect landing at Ivato International Airport in Antananarivo, Madagascar: the arrival flow, transit rules, and onward transport.
Ivato International Airport, just north of Antananarivo, splits its traffic across two terminals close to one another, one for international flights and one for domestic. Arriving from abroad, you will be in the international terminal, where the arrivals area holds immigration counters, baggage carousels, and a customs post in sequence.
Madagascar issues a visa to nearly every nationality right at the immigration desk rather than requiring anything arranged in advance, one of the more straightforward arrival processes in this list; have your passport ready and be prepared to pay the visa fee in cash at the counter, since arriving without it is the most common way this step stalls. Currency exchange is available near the exits of both the international and domestic terminals if you need local currency for that fee or for onward transport.
Because the two terminals are separate buildings, a connection from an international arrival to a domestic onward flight means a short walk or shuttle between them rather than staying in one building, on top of clearing immigration first since Madagascar has no airside transfer that skips it.
Taxis and pre-arranged transfers wait outside the international terminal for the drive into central Antananarivo.
