What you need to apply

  • PassportValid for at least six months beyond your period of stay in the United States, unless your country has an exemption agreement.
  • Passport-style photographUploaded while you complete the DS-160. Bring one printed photo to the interview if the upload fails.
  • Completed application formThe confirmation page of Form DS-160, the online nonimmigrant visa application. Everyone needs their own, including family members listed on your passport.
  • Application feeThe payment receipt, if you are required to pay before the interview.
  • Evidence of ties to your home countryEvidence of the purpose of your trip, your intent to leave the United States afterwards, and your ability to pay for it. Proof of employment or family ties is usually what does this.
  • In-person interviewAt the US embassy or consulate where you apply. Ink-free digital fingerprints are usually taken during it.

A letter of invitation or affidavit of support is not required, and is not one of the factors used to decide the application. The embassy or consulate where you apply publishes its own instructions and may ask for more.
